Chernobyl Diaries Not Lookin’ Good

Many people are looking for a different type of movie to see this weekend, maybe something more adult and not so centered around super heroes or fantasy like Men in Black and the like. However, the new movie Chernobyl Diaries might not be the movie you're looking for.

This new Warner Borthers release looks to capitalize on the adult market with a horror movie to entice movie goers away from the juggernaught Avengers and newly released Will Smith picture the latest in the MiB series but reviews are not looking good.

From Warner Brothers:

Chernobyl Diaries is an original story from Oren Peli, who first terrified audiences with his groundbreaking thriller, Paranormal Activity. The film follows a group of six young vacationers who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an “extreme” tour guide. Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago. After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon finds themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone…

Reviewer after reviewerhas trashed the film with only a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and IMdb only getting a 6.1 although it is a well known fact that ratings always go down on IMdb after the initial ratings blitz by those involved in the film.

The Pittsburg Post Gazette sums it up:

As for the fodder for slaughter, it's a cookie-cutter cast that offers the brave, the scared and the stupid. It doesn't help that the best actor of the bunch, Jesse McCartney, gets sidelined early.

If you have any hopes of enjoying the film, leave your brain at the concession stand. Mr. Peli ignores quick solutions — such as a van full of people with cell phones who never try to call for help — to keep the story moving ahead. It takes that kind of mindless approach if you have any hope of enjoying “Chernobyl Diaries.” Otherwise, it's a huge meltdown.
